ZADORRA RIVER’S MASTER PLAN FOR THE HIDROLOGY AND ENVIRONMENTAL RESTORATION

The reality of environmental quality of Vitoria-Gasteiz is widely known and valued by residents and also by visitors. The General Plan, in line with historical legacy and with a clear will for the future establishes as priorities for the achievement of Green Belt to give an integrative solution to the peripheral spaces, wich are characterized by a particular problem arising from its boundary position between rural and urban areas, and also to satisfy the public demand for entertainment outside and relieve the pressures that the influx of visitors has on the environment near the city. This Plan tries to provide solutions to the problems caused by floods of the Zadorra river while getting a massive recovery of riparian vegetation and provide the city park Zadorra peripheral to complete the Green Belt. From the definition of objectives and criteria for intervention, as outlined below, and the analysis of “hydraulic study Zadorra River” and “analysis of alternatives for protection against flooding in the village” proposed guidelines that should guide the most appropriate set of actions to reduce periodic flooding of the river Zadorra, ecologically restore the river and its banks and put the banks of the river for public use, making it a green corridor that is an integral part of the so-called Ring Green city.
